Meditation and Mindfulness  

The West has become more and more aware of the importance of mindfulness and meditation over the past few years and it is becoming more and more mainstream in peoples lives.

I use mindfulness meditation techniques within my therapy sessions where appropriate and can also teach mindfulness techniques specifically if required.

What conditions can Meditation be used for?

Meditation is great for normal living and can help bring a sense of calm and wholeness to anyone who tries it - personally, I would recommend it as a regular practise to everyone - you don't have a reason because it should, in my opinion, become normal practise in peoples lives.

That said, there are a number of conditions for which meditation (mindfulness) is particularly helpful and these include anxiety and depression.

What is the difference between meditation and mindfulness?

This is a bit subjective but my own thoughts are that:

 

Meditation is a broad description of techniques that allow the mind to be quietened and to allow more consistent focus on whatever is being meditated upon which can be the present moment or ones future or ones health or others health etc.

Mindfulness tends to relate to a specific form of meditation that focuses the mind on the present moment.  It is a Westernised form of Buddhist meditation popularised by an American named Jon Kabat-Zinn in the 70's which teaches methods to be in the present moment and to be aware of the present moment and to notice it without judgment.

I use an eclectic approach in my therapy sessions and will use mindfulness alongside counselling skills, hypnotherapy and even yoga (if desired/helpful) as appropriate in consultation with the client.

1 to 1 meditation sessions

I offer 1 to 1 meditation lessons - in these the client can experience a more intense introduction and development of a meditation practise.

The sessions are conducted in the cabin in my garden - a peaceful small log cabin which is only used for meditation and to see my hypnotherapy clients.

​

Here the client will learn correct posture whether that be on the floor (e.g. on an exercise mat) or a meditation stool or seated in a chair - posture is very important.

​

Sessions are tailored to each clients specific needs but typically will include guided meditations which are often recorded for the client to take away as mp3's or burnt to a CD.

​

Sessions are £45 per for 90 minutes

Mindfulness taster session

I run a mindfulness taster session regularly - this is a single 2 hour session in a very small group (4 participants only) and is designed to give you an idea of what it's all about and to see if you would like to followup by enrolling on the full 8 week course (see below).

​

The cost of the taster session is Β£20 which can be deducted from the cost of the 8 week course if this is booked within 6 months of the taster session.

What to expect:

​

At the session you will receive some basic literature about the process of mindfulness and taught some basics of the techniques/principals.  There will be ample opportunity to practise some mindfull meditation during the 2 hours also.

8 Week Mindfulness course

I offer an 8 week mindfulness course in which you can learn, experientially, how to apply mindfulness practise in your daily lives - this is great for chronic anxiety disorders and mild to moderate depression.

The course runs for 8 consecutive weeks and each session lasts for one and a half hours (sometimes may overun to up to two hours).

​

The cost is Β£140 (Β£120 if previously paid for the taster session in past 6 months).

​

What to expect:

​

With a maximum of 4 attendees the group is small and so each attendee is given more attention than you will find in larger groups.  I "interview" each attendant by telephone or in person before they commit as I need to be sure the course is suitable - there are a few conditions for which the course is not recommended.

​

I run the classes on a demands led basis so cannot indicate when classes will run but rather I run them according to potential attendees requests - this means I can be quite flexible in terms of days and times of session although they do have to be the same day and time each week for any given 8 week course.

​

At each session you will receive literature about the process of mindfulness being explored in that session.  You will be taught different techniques and more about the principals of mindfulness.  "Homework" sheets are given out at the end of each session - the idea being that participants should practise during the following week and keep a record of their practise including any thoughts and insights they have - these are private to the individual but can be shared at the next session if desired. 

​

This course is only of benefit if you can commit some time to practise during the times between sessions - a minimum of 15 minutes per day is recommended and ideal would be 30 minutes or even longer.
